Textual analysis- Dj H, Dj Rags ft Miss Pooja and Nirmal Sidhu - Char Panj

This video clip is of a bhangra song which has a very bright and playful video to it. As you can see the video consists of a variety of bright and cheerful colours from backdrops to costumes, and even instruments. The video is made up off models, male and female traditional bhangra dancers which are originated from the Punjab, Dhol players (Indian drums), the singers and the musicians/Dj.

The video has about nine different shots with different coloured backdrops which are accompanied by the singers and the dancers also dressed in different colours. What makes the video different to others is that it’s not edited in a common way. From the beginning to the end, every time a different clip is shown, it looks like splats of paint are being thrown over each other creating layers. And in each of these layers a different coloured clip is shown, so that’s how the next clip is introduced.

I like the costumes that the female dancers are wearing in the video. They are traditional Punjabi outfits which are easy to move and dance around in. Bright colours like cerise, red, yellow and turquoise is to be seen in this video. Funky colours are often associated with bhangra/Indian music. The men are wearing similar outfits too which are also traditional costumes and for easy movement.
The dancers make the video more exciting to watch as they come out with different moves and they are also one of the main parts in the video along with the singers.

The models are wearing Indian clothes too. Some are wearing traditional styles and other are wearing more sleek and fashionable styles such as long fitted skirts with embroided Indian tops. They are mainly posing and have been brought in to give the video another type of attraction.

The two Djs in the video are quite casual dressed and are just going along with the other dancers and singers. The female singer changes her costumes several times throughout the videos while the male singer is in one outfit throughout. She also acts out some of the song through her dancing which makes her more the main person.

The two Dhol players are very casual dressed in jeans and t-shirts and are shown quite a few times playing the dhol and enjoying the song.

In this video there are not many different type of shots. Everything has been filmed from the front into a wide shot. This fits all the backdrops, and people in to one shot. It’s pretty simple and the style and effects have been given more attention. The lighting is very high but by using bright colours in the backgrounds and costumes not much light is needed to lighten up the video.

Overall it’s a interesting simple video, and its quite common because its not set outside or in a club or a party or on stage its been shot on a set where they have changed only backgrounds. This means that the focus has to be good and acting, dance moves and miming needs to be done very accurately. Its one of my favourite videos because its unusual, different and very attractive.
